SPRING 2020 Short Term Advance Information

The Goal of the program is to assist all students in meeting education expenses incurred prior to the date that their financial aid funds are available for disbursement. The Short Term Advance is a University cash advance for purchasing textbooks or other unanticipated expenses. Funds will be directly deposited into the students existing bank account.

NOTE: Short Term Advance funds will begin (all dates subject to change) to disburse:
  • December 10, 2019 for Early Spring

  • January 7, 2020 for SPRING POT's (1,2 & 4)
  • February 11, 2020 for SPRING POT (5)
  • March 10, 2020 for SPRING POT(3)
  • March 24, 2020 for SPRING POT(6)
If you are meeting ALL eligibility criteria.

When applying for a Short Term Advance students will need both their FAU Z Number and FAU NetID (id used to log into MyFAU). Bank account information will no longer be needed when filling out this application; however, to view or establish direct deposit for Short Term Advance or Financial Aid refunds, see the instructions below.

The key to the success of the program is timely repayment by borrowers so that other students may in turn utilize the funds as needed.

Specific Terms and Conditions/Instructions

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE STUDENTS ONLY: Not eligible to apply - Please see the Associate Director in the Office of Medical Student Financial Aid in the College of Medicine.
CONSORTIUM STUDENTS ONLY: Please download and submit the Consortium Student Short Term Advance Application.
  1. The maximum Advance amount is $750. A non-refundable service fee of $7.50 will be assessed for each Short Term Advance.
  2. You must enter your Z number and FAU NetID for the Short Term Advance application. If you do not know your Z Number, click here. ( NOTE: Be sure to input your correct Z Number and FAU NetID; if you enter the wrong Z Number or FAU Net ID, your short term advance request will NOT load to the system.)
  3. Students
    • must be degree-seeking
    • must be enrolled at least half-time
    • must not have a previous A/R balance with FAU
    • must have at least a 2.0 GPA for undergraduate students and a 3.0 GPA for graduate students
    • must be at least 18 years of age

    NOTEIf student is under 18 years of age, please download the Parental Short Term Advance Application and submit to the Office of Student Financial Aid.  In addition, the student must also setup direct deposit online.  

    NOTE:  If enrolled as an Outgoing Consortium student, please download the Outgoing Consortium Short Term Advance Application and submit to the Office of Student Financial Aid.  In addition, the student must also setup direct deposit online.

    EARLY SPRING IMPORTANT NOTICE regarding the Half-Time Enrollment requirement (6 or more credits for Undergraduate and 3 or more credits for Graduate student):

    • If your half-time enrollment is based ONLY on Spring 2020 (classes begin January 11, 2020), the Short Term Advance will NOT disburse until the week before on January 7th, if ALL eligibility criteria are met.
    • If you are enrolled in any combination of 'Early Spring 2020' and 'Spring 2020' for the minimum half-time enrollment required, your advance will disburse the week before class start date of 'Early Spring 2020' (classes begin December 14, 2019) session if ALL eligibility criteria are met.

  4. The Short Term Advance online application will OPEN on November 25, 2019 and will CLOSE on April 8, 2020 (dates are subject to change without notice).
  5. Advances will not be initiated the last two weeks of classes or between school terms.
  6. Applications will be reviewed and approved by the Financial Aid Office. Upon approval, the application will be forwarded to the Controller's Office for disbursement via direct deposit to the student's bank account.
  7. Students may NOT have more than one Short Term Advance per semester.
  8. When funds are limited, preference will be given to full-time students.

Method of Payment

Funds will be directly deposited to the student's bank account. FAU is able to directly deposit your Short Term Advance into your existing financial institution. No Paper-Checks Will Be Issued.

To view and/or update your direct deposit information for Short Term Advance funds or financial aid refunds, do the following:

Repayment

Short Term Advance will be due forty-five calendar (45) days from the date of disbursement, in accordance with the terms stated on the Short Term Advance application. Short Term Advances for Financial Aid Recipients will be due at the time financial aid funds are available for disbursement.

Students who have an outstanding Short Term Advance will be prevented from registering,
receiving a diploma, receiving grades, or securing an official transcript.
